Moxie Musing

Upon returning home from Haiti, I have had this deep desire in my heart to extend my "mission" from beyond the context of the "third-world" and into the realm of the real world. I want my "mission" to extend to all walks of life-- rich or poor, hungry or satisfied, clothed or naked, christians and non-christians. My message is not just for what we can be doing for "the least of these".. but a message for ALL humanity on what we SHOULD be doing for "the least of these" in our home, in our community, in our world... but even within our own self. We are all broken people. Not one better than the next. We all suffer and struggle. We sometimes stumble, trip, and even fall within the shadow of our own hopes and desires. I believe there are many people that have it deep in their hearts to do good and to help others. Perhaps it's just a morsel of care and compassion for another being, a mother/father, a brother/sister, a friend, a child, or a pet? Or maybe it's just for your own personal self? I am not here to decide that for people, but I am here to inspire.... provide suggestions for a lifestyle that encompasses compassion, consciousness, and health.

Living in one of the poorest countries in the world, has opened my eyes to a more worldly view; a "One Human Family" if you will...... It has made me more compassionate about living creatures of all sorts, of the health of our environment, and the people that work to make our lives more luxurious (yes, slavery still exists in this world). I became incredibly frustrated with myself for participating in these actions (ie. shopping at stores that utilize sweatshops.. fast fashion) and not doing anything about it. I care enough about people living in what we deem as "poverty" to sacrifice a year to go live amongst them.. then why couldn't I do MORE that would impact MORE lives by SIMPLY changing the way I live. Setting a new standard and context of life.

Over the past two years, I have spent time talking with some incredible human beings and reading (and reading... and reading.. and reading), and reflecting on what all of this means. I am still trying to make sense of it all, as I am sure I always will be. Throughout the course of these 2 years, however, I have learned an incredible amount of information about this statement:

I have learned about fast fashion, climate change, human slavery, body image/ eating disorder... and the destructive behaviors we do that kill people and kill ourselves, most often times without our conscious consent  (The Bangladesh Factory fire in spring 2013 anyone?). Maybe I am wrong in believing this, but I don't think we, as human beings, want to live in an uncivilized world that causes undo harm to ourselves, our neighbors, and our planet. Or maybe that's just me?

So after several restless nights and some exchanged messages with friends, "Moxie Musing" was born. Moxie meaning courage, pep, energy, and positivity. For those that know me, positivity is my strength... and I'd like my message to be positive and empowering. Musing means to think deeply or meditate on something. And that's what I hope to do... and hope to inspire others to do too. I want to muse on life.. muse on health, nutrition, fashion, environment, hunger, poverty, social justice, but I don't just want to muse about these things.. I also want to provide alternative solutions to these problems. AND I DON'T WANT TO DO IT ALONE. I am hoping this will become a COLLABORATIVE project that will feature OTHER MOXIE people doing MOXIE things to respond to social injustices, climate change, poverty, and health... I DONT have all the answers. I DONT know all the problems. AND I am continuing to learn about them the more I engage in conversation with people. WE ARE ALL LEARNING... and the more we learn, the better we can do to create a world of peace and justice. By learning, we MUST be willing to change ourselves in an effort to respond. Sometimes this takes great strength and courage... especially in a world full of social norms and social pressures. But you won't be alone.

(This is the sound of all of us)
